What Makes Life Good

Six pillars of
Cyprus living.

From climate to safety to cuisine — the things that actually shape daily quality of life.

Climate

330+ days of sunshine. Mild winters (10–18°C), long warm summers (28–35°C), short spring/autumn — effectively endless outdoor season.

Safety

Among the safest countries in Europe. Low violent crime, safe for children and women walking alone at night, strong community feel.

Healthcare

Modern public (GESY) and private healthcare systems. EU-standard hospitals, English-speaking doctors common, affordable private insurance.

Food & Culture

Mediterranean cuisine, fresh produce, excellent wine, rich history (10,000+ years), festivals, arts scene, and legendary Cypriot hospitality.

Education

Strong international schools (British, American, IB), top-ranked public universities, English widely spoken from early years.

Access

EU passport-free travel. 3–4h flights to most European capitals. 2 international airports. Strategic gateway to Middle East and Africa.

The Mediterranean Climate

Life outdoors,
almost every day.

Cyprus has the warmest, driest climate in the EU. Mild winters mean you can still swim in November. Long summers mean evenings on the terrace from April through October.

Average annual rainfall is among the lowest in Europe. Winters are short and mild. Daylight hours are generous year-round.

Translation: you're outdoors most days. Beach, hiking, café life, sunset dinners — the standard rhythm of Cyprus living.

FAQ

Life in Cyprus,
answered.

The questions we hear most often from people considering moving to or spending more time in Cyprus.

Have another question?
Is English widely spoken?
Yes — very widely. Cyprus was a British colony until 1960, and English remains the dominant second language across business, healthcare, education, and daily life. You can fully live in Cyprus without learning Greek, though picking up basics is appreciated.
How is the healthcare system?
Cyprus has a strong dual public-private healthcare system. The public system (GESY) provides universal coverage for residents. Private healthcare is affordable — full family insurance often €200–€400/month for comprehensive coverage with quick specialist access and English-speaking doctors.
Can I drive with my foreign license?
EU licenses are valid indefinitely. Non-EU licenses (US, UK, Russia, etc.) can be used for 6 months, then you exchange for a Cyprus license — usually without a test. Cyprus drives on the left (British-style), which surprises some new arrivals.
What about schools for my kids?
Strong options across international schools (British curriculum, IB, American). The American Academy Larnaca, English School Nicosia, and similar schools in all major cities are well regarded. Fees typically €6K–€14K/year — significantly lower than equivalent UK/US private schools.
How expat-friendly is Cyprus?
Extremely. Around 20% of the population is foreign-born. Large British, Russian, Greek mainland, Israeli, and Lebanese communities, plus growing numbers of Americans, Germans, and recent tech arrivals. Active expat groups, international schools, places of worship, and specialty food stores in all cities.
What about summer heat?
Summer days (July–August) regularly hit 35°C+ inland and 30–33°C on the coast. Nearly every property has A/C, so indoor life is fine. Coastal cities (especially Paphos and Larnaca) benefit from sea breezes. Locals adapt with late dinners, afternoon rest, and evenings outdoors — it becomes part of the rhythm.
